After much debate and research, we decided to re-format the Black and Blue Media website not only to update our web design, but also change the back end software. While Wordpress had much to offer, Joomla seemed much more flexible for what we needed. With Joomla, not only is it easier for us to update and make changes, but we can also keep up with the need for all company sites to be more content-rich. Overall, we are a company, even if most people in our industry know exactly what someone means when they say, "You need publicity? Call Jay and Sherry."
In a similar turn of events, Ron Harris has created a blog to help promote his line of web sites and new projects. Sherry's been working very closely with Mr. Harris and his webmasters on a daily basis. In this case, Wordpress was a better fit for Ron Harris, as it was more streamlined and connected him directly into their RSS feed.
On a personal note, Sherry was talking with a prospective client today and asked "Who are your customers?" Like many people, he wasn't able to easily answer the question. It's a question we find ourselves asking potential clients more often, and we're always surprised at how few really have an answer. Sometimes we'llĀ hear "porn fans", "raincoaters" or "couples". But that really isn't the answer that is needed when you are marketing a product.
While that is a good start, when planning a business you need to remember your two key questions are "What is my product?" and "Who are my customers?" Red Bull set the best example. Red Bull sells energy and the ability to stay awake and alert, their customers are anyone who needs a boost. Knowing what you're selling, and who you're selling it to, is Marketing 101 and should be considered before you send out your first press release. A good publicist will help you to target that customer.
